Ingredients
8oz ( 225g ) allpurpose ( plain) flour
4 level tsp baking powder
1oz ( 25 g ) caster sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2oz ( 50 g ) unsalted cold butter
1/4 pint ( 150 ml ) buttermilk
Method
Preheat the oven to 230°C Gas 8
1) In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add butter and buttermilk; stir until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs
4.roll out dough until 1/2 inch ( 1 cm ) thick on a floured surface
5. cut into about 3/4 inch thick and 4 inches wide, cut into 8 rounds shape with a biscuit cutter or glass
6.place on to a greased baking tray and brush the scones with buttermilk
7.bake in oven for 8-10 minutes until golden brown
8. when cooled serve with strawberry jam and thick cream, delicious
This basic scone recipe can be adapted by adding chopped dried fruit or nuts.
