10 dried red chillies, 25g coriander seeds, 20 g cumin seeds, 15 g black peppercorns, 1tsp mustard seeds, 15 g fenugreek seeds, 1/4 tsp ground asafoetida, 1 tbsp ground turmeric, 1 tbsp oil, 25 g yellow split peas( channa dal) 25 g white gram beans( urad dal)
Method
Remove the seeds from the chillies, dry roast the whole spices over a medium heat for about 5 minutes, when the seeds stop spattering, add the asafoetida and turmeric and stir for a minute longer, put the mixture in a bowl, add the oil to the pan and fry the split peas and gram beans until darken, stirring frequently, add them to the bowl of spices, mix well and grind when cool.
